Firebag Stage 4 Cogeneration Plant

Suncor Energy Inc.

Description

Located 40 kilometers northeast of their original oil sands plant, Suncor's Firebag in-situ operatons allows for the extraction of large oil reserves that cannot be viably recovered through customary mining methods.

This development requires incremental on-site steam and electrical power. To meet this need, Suncor Fireback Stage 4 consists of two 80 MW cogens that produce steam and electrical power and utilize natural gas for the Gas Turbine Generator (GTG) and Once Through Heat Recovery Steam Generators (OTHRSG).

In January 2008, Canonbie was awarded a cost reimbursable contract to supply labour, materials, construction equipment, tools and consumables to construct the facility for Suncor.

In addition to providing constructability support to engineering, our scope of work includes:

Civil

  • Excavation/backfill/grading and site access roads
  • Piled foundations
  • Concrete foundations and floors
  • Structural support steel for piperack modules and equipment modules

Mechanical HRSG boiler assembly

  • Gas turbine generator installation and component assembly
  • Glycol coolers
  • Pipe fabrication
  • Piperack and equipment module assemblies
  • Coatings and insulation

Commissioning and start-up Electrical/Instrumentation

  • High Voltage Transformers
  • "E" House
  • Cable tray both module and field install
  • Electrical wiring and associated instrumentation
  • Grounding

Firebag Stage 4's design and deliverables will be a duplication of Stage 3's, and Canonbie will be diligent in maximizing potential cost savings by capitalizing on lessons learned in Stage 3.
